This week we had the wonderful pleasure of having Dave and Nancy Harper as our speakers. It was great to see how the two of them worked together to teach us about team. We are also excited they have joined staff with YWAM Vancouver and will stay with us. We look forward to getting to know them better!
They began by explaining how the role we had in our family of origin usually influences the role we take on in a team. We don’t always realize how much our family background influences us. We took time to think about the roles we had in our families and how family has shaped us and formed our expectations of others on a team.
We learned about characteristics of high and low trust teams. Trust is a huge thing when you are working in teams. It affects how you work and communicate together.
We talked about dealing with conflicts on teams. When you are working with others there WILL be conflict. When a conflict comes to the surface it is an opportunity to talk things through and listen to each other. Not always easy, but very important.
Dave and Nancy gave us opportunities to role play and to practice how to say an effective apology. We got the chance to practice our listening skills. For some of us this was difficult and we realized we aren't as great at listening to others as we thought we were.
We discussed the way each one of us brings something different to a team and we had to think specifically about what we bring. We wrote out some of our strengths and talents and considered how these will shape and strengthen the teams we are on right now.
On the weekend some of us went to the beach to have a relaxing afternoon, while others chilled at home. We’re watching the Marvel movies and for some it is their first time seeing them. We had a little dance party in the kitchen while waiting for dinner to cook. All of these activities were a great recipe for restored energy for the week to come.
