Spring DTS 2016 – Week 5

This week was all Bible, Bible, Bible, with guest speaker Bryan Appelt. Bryan has been staffing and leading the a YWAM secondary school called SBS (School of Biblical Studies) for over 14 years. With a wealth of experience and incredible passion for the Word, Bryan took us through the Old and New Testament canon, which felt a lot like an ancient history class - we loved it! He spoke about the journey of the Bible through each language, from Hebrew, to Greek, Latin etc, and discussed the reliability of the Bible, comparing it to other religious texts and archaeology findings.

Bryan also did a fantastic job at equipping us to study the Bible well. What stood out for me was a simple truth, but a helpful reminder; “God has given us two gifts - the Bible and the Holy Spirit, so we need to use both, together”. Bryan challenged us by pointing out that our effectiveness as Christians is dependent on how well we know the Bible. As he helped us understand where context plays a role in our interpretation and application of scripture, we soon realised just how remarkable the Bible truly is. I think I can speak for everyone when I say Bryan really brought the bible to life!

On Wednesday afternoon I had the privilege of leading intercession, which involves praying on behalf of other people. We decided to pray for the city of Vancouver, with particular focus on the community surrounding the YWAM centre. We went out in pairs and prayed for the local schools, corner stores, churches as well as any homes that we felt God lead us to. Some of us even approached people asking them if they’d like prayer which really got us out of our comfort zones!

On Thursday night we attended a young adults evening with our local church, West Coast Christian Fellowship. We had a potluck dinner at one of the leaders homes, where everyone brought a dish to share with the rest of the group. We then went to Cleveland Dam for a leisurely hike and were absolutely speechless at the incredible views. Think classic Canada...mountains, lakes and woods. It was SO beautiful, with many pictures taken 🙂

On the weekend a few of us headed to a mission conference in a nearby town called Abbotsford, with YWAM Vancouver Training Director, Randy.  Danielle, Simon and I helped promote YWAM, sharing our experiences so far and encouraging people to have a heart for mission. One of the highlights was on Saturday when Randy kindly took us across the US Border to Lynden, Washington for lunch. Funnily enough it was the exact same day Donald Trump was in town.

The rest of the team went to Lynn Canyon, which is very popular among tourists for its 50 meter high suspension bridge. Hiking trails, waterfalls and deep pools were also enjoyed, with just a special few braving the cold water.

Stay tuned for next week as we discover the father heart of God with Rene Laframboise, from Montreal, Quebec.
