Spring DTS 2016 – Week 6

Our speaker this week, Rene Laframboise, from Montreal, Quebec, guided us through the father heart of God. He reminded us that we are God’s children, heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ (Romans 8). Because of this truth, our identity is in Father God. It is in him that we find wholeness in who we are, and fullness of life. He is the source of everything. The more we are in tune with God and who He is as our Father, the freer we become.

As Rene unpacked what the Bible says about God, our own concepts and perceptions of God - both true and false - were brought to light. He challenged us that it is the word in which we not only discover who God is, but who we are too. God wants us to have strong foundations, being grounded in Him. If we lack support on the inside, then we will seek outside sources of value.

A highlight for all of our team this week was on Friday during our ministry sessions, in which we process our teachings for the week. Rene used this time for each of us to receive prayer for any parts of our lives that need healing related to God as our father. This involved many tears and tissues, but also an incredible experience of God’s immeasurable love. As we gathered around each of our classmates, it was evident that God wanted to bless us in a personal way and speak straight to our hearts.

Another exciting part of this week was on Wednesday, as we celebrated my 25th birthday. I’m a twin, so this was my first birthday away from my brother, but also away from home in Australia. Needless to say, the YWAM students and staff spoiled me, making me feel very loved. Beginning with a Skype date with my family, a red velvet cake and Vegemite sandwiches for morning tea, a scavenger hunt for presents after class, Mexican food for dinner, and ending with a surprise trip to Vancouver’s famous Gelato bar with over 238 flavours...the day was very special indeed.

On Friday afternoon, Jacqui (a YWAM staff member) came over to the house and spoke to us about the importance of Sabbath; having a day of rest. As DTS students we have a lot going on with class all week, community services, book reports, individual quiet time, as well as time to sightsee and hang with our housemates. As we shared communion together (with freshly baked homemade bread) we prayed about how we can take time out each week.

Over the weekend we all went a bit Marvel crazy, beginning with Iron Man 1 on Friday night, and then Captain America and Thor on Saturday night. However, it is worth mentioning that before this took place another dance party occurred in the kitchen while cooking dinner, involving Spice Girls, Gangham Style and many questionable dance moves. After church on Sunday afternoon the house enjoyed an Indian feast of Chicken Tikka Masala for lunch. Then Jaron, a fellow YWAM student, surprised us with Peanut Butter Pie, which was just incredible!

Next week, Heather, from New Zealand, is taking us on an adventure as we spend the week discussing spiritual warfare.
